India Accelerates Clean Energy Transition, Phases Out Kerosene

The Indian government is making significant strides in its clean energy transition, reducing dependence on polluting fuels like kerosene while promoting sustainable energy alternatives. Through a multi-pronged strategy, India has expanded LPG coverage, renewable energy adoption, and universal electricity access, ensuring millions’ cleaner, healthier, and more efficient energy solutions.

With initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and Saubhagya, India has achieved near-universal electricity coverage and provided clean cooking fuel to over 10.33 crore households, accelerating the shift from traditional fuels to modern alternatives.

• SATAT Initiative : Promoting Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) as a clean fuel.
• Renewable Energy Expansion: Strengthening solar, biofuel, and ethanol production.
• Kerosene-Free States: 13 states have eliminated kerosene dependency since 2015.

The government rationalized Public Distribution System (PDS) kerosene allocations to reduce reliance on kerosene further, provided cash incentives for voluntary surrender, and encouraged alternative fuel adoption.

Scaling Up Clean Cooking Solutions

PMUY has been a game-changer in India’s energy transition, ensuring that even economically weaker households can access clean cooking fuel. The government has increased targeted subsidies to ₹300 per cylinder to make LPG more affordable, significantly reducing household fuel costs.

Additionally, awareness campaigns, LPG Panchayats, and distributor expansion have driven a massive shift from kerosene and solid fuels to LPG, improving health and environmental outcomes.
