Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has set an ambitious target to achieve water positivity across all operational sites by 2025-26. This initiative aligns with its commitment to sustainability, water conservation, and climate resilience, making it a pioneering move in the green energy sector.

The company has significantly progressed by reducing its freshwater footprint and implementing innovative water conservation measures. One of its key strategies includes robotic cleaning technology, which in 2024 alone helped avoid 347,310 kL of water consumption—equivalent to the annual water usage of 1.58 million households.

With climate change intensifying water scarcity worldwide, Adani Green Energy is leading by example, demonstrating that large-scale renewable energy projects can coexist with responsible water management.

H2: Innovative Water Conservation for a Sustainable Future

Achieving water positivity means that AGEL will replenish more freshwater than it consumes across all its sites. To realize this vision, the company has deployed several strategic initiatives, including:

  • Robotic Cleaning of Solar Panels – Reducing water dependency for maintenance.
  • Rainwater Harvesting – Capturing and storing rainwater for operational and community use.
  • Water Use Optimization – Minimizing wastage across all facilities.
  • Community Engagement – Supporting local water restoration projects.

By 2022-23, AGEL had already achieved net water positivity at all sites exceeding 200 MW capacity. Now, it is expanding these initiatives to cover all operational locations by 2025-26.

Tackling Water Scarcity in High-Stress Regions

Adani Green Energy has been particularly active in water-stressed areas like Khavda, Jaisalmer, and Kutch, where its conservation efforts have helped replenish local water resources. These regions, facing severe drought conditions, have benefited from AGEL’s water management interventions.

Globally, water scarcity is becoming a pressing challenge. The IPCC 2023 report estimates that half of the world’s population experiences severe water shortages for at least part of the year, while a quarter faces extremely high water stress, consuming over 80% of their renewable freshwater supply.

With climate change accelerating water scarcity, AGEL’s leadership in water sustainability is setting an example for industries worldwide.
