Neelachal Ispat’s Commitment to Water Sustainability  

In a significant step toward eco-conscious industrial growth, Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) has unveiled its ambitious expansion plan at its Duburi steel plant in Jajpur, Odisha. The company is scaling its production capacity from 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9.5 MTPA while implementing innovative water sustainability measures. These initiatives promise to transform the steel production landscape, emphasizing resource conservation and environmental stewardship.  

Innovative Water-Smart Technologies Transform Steel Production

NINL’s commitment to water sustainability is evident in its forward-looking strategies. The plant’s current water consumption is 2.71 cubic meters (m³) per tonne of crude steel (TCS). Despite the tenfold increase in production, the expanded facility is projected to reduce its water usage to 2.66 m³/TCS—a remarkable achievement in resource efficiency.  

Though seemingly modest, this 1.84% reduction per tonne is a significant milestone in an industry traditionally known for its high water consumption. The achievement is rooted in the company’s integration of advanced water-saving technologies, including Zero Effluent Discharge (ZED) systems, rainwater harvesting, and cutting-edge recycling practices.  

Zero Effluent Discharge: A Game-Changer  

At the heart of NINL’s water sustainability plan is its Zero Effluent Discharge (ZED) system. This initiative ensures that wastewater generated during steel production is treated and reused within the plant. By recycling water through advanced sewage treatment technologies, the plant eliminates the release of untreated effluents into the environment.  

Rainwater harvesting is another cornerstone of the ZED system. NINL is installing infrastructure to collect and store rainwater, supplementing the plant’s water requirements. This approach reduces dependency on external water sources and aligns with sustainable water management principles.  

Dry gas cleaning systems in the blast furnace and steelmaking units minimize water usage by replacing traditional wet processes with more efficient alternatives. These technologies not only conserve water but also enhance the overall sustainability of steel production.  

Harnessing Stormwater and Existing Infrastructure  

In addition to its ZED system, NINL is maximizing the use of stormwater, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Stormwater will be harnessed and channeled into the plant’s operations, significantly reducing the need to tap into natural water bodies.  

By leveraging existing infrastructure for water sourcing, the plant minimizes its expansion’s ecological footprint. Excess water, if any, will be discharged intermittently in full compliance with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines, ensuring adherence to strict environmental standards.  

Aligning with Tata Steel’s Net Zero Vision  

As a Tata Steel subsidiary, NINL’s expansion aligns seamlessly with the parent company’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. By integrating water sustainability into its core operations, NINL exemplifies Tata Steel’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and resource optimization.
