Ecojet, a “flag carrier for green Britain,” will debut early next year with a 19-seater plane between Edinburgh and Southampton. After a year of kerosene, the aircraft will be upgraded with engines that convert green hydrogen into power.
Vince started Ecotricity, the UK’s first green energy company, 1995 and has since launched low-carbon and ethical businesses in energy, transport, food, and football. He chairs League Two’s Forest Green Rovers, the “world’s greenest football club.”
Several green-striped 19-seater 300-mile planes will establish the airline. Vince wants routes in all of Britain’s major cities. Staff will offer plant-based meals in eco-friendly clothes. 70-seater European-bound jets will be introduced 18 months later. The company is applying for a Civil Aviation Authority license and airport slots.
Ecojet will start with kerosene-powered planes because founding an airline could be faster. Vince stated he was not thrilled with starting the project by burning fossil fuels, but the airline needed to launch soon to acquire planes and landing slots and “keep up the momentum” of the business.
