The Chennai Corporation to register carbon credits

The Greater Chennai Corporation has identified projects for biomining, non-motorized transportation, sewage treatment, urban forestry, solid waste management, and rooftop solar panels to begin making money from trading carbon credits on the global market.

According to the officials, the Corporation’s solid waste management initiatives are the most promising in lowering carbon emissions and are anticipated to be registered first.

As part of the process, the shortlisted consultants for the project have conducted in-depth conversations with GCC teams from the departments of electricity, solid waste management, mechanical, and parks, and preliminary eligibility checks have also been carried out for the ongoing projects. The civic organization will conduct a thorough feasibility analysis of emission reduction initiatives to determine their eligibility under the global carbon credit mechanisms. According to the feasibility report, the projects will be registered under the carbon credit procedures.
