Millets for Health: ICAR-ATARI & NSG Collaboration

A Unique Initiative to Promote Nutritional Security

On January 18, 2025, the National Security Guard (NSG), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, partnered with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Kolkata, and Howrah Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to organize a Millet Mela at the NSG RH Kolkata campus. The event was designed to promote awareness of millet’s health benefits among NSG personnel and their families.

Colonel Anil Kumar, Group Commander, 29 Special Composite Group, NSG, inaugurated the Millet Mela. He lauded the joint efforts of ICAR-ATARI and Howrah KVK and stressed how such initiatives bridge the gap between agriculture and public health, ensuring a nutritious and sustainable future.

Millets: A Superfood for Health & Sustainability

During the event, Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, highlighted the vital role of millet in a climate-resilient and nutrition-rich diet. He drew an analogy between NSG’s motto, “Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha” (Excellence in Security Everywhere) and the protective role of millets in enhancing nutrition and food security. Millets, he pointed out, are rich in antioxidants and micronutrients, have a low water footprint, and offer a sustainable farming alternative.

Interactive Displays & Food Demonstrations

The Howrah KVK team set up an informative stall showcasing:

  • The nutritional benefits of millet.
  • Innovative millet production technologies.
  • Visual exhibits and posters on the health advantages of millet consumption.

Culinary Delights: A Celebration of Millet-Based Dishes

A highlight of the event was the best-dish contest, where family members of NSG personnel showcased creative millet-based recipes. Entries were judged on taste, aroma, presentation, and innovation, adding an engaging, hands-on element to the event.

Dishes Presented & Served:

  • Khichdi (Barnyard Millet) and Kheer (Foxtail Millet) – Prepared by Howrah KVK.
  • Sorghum Khichdi, Millet Tikka, Jowar ka Halwa – Contributed by NSG personnel.
  • Variety of traditional millet recipes – Distributed among attendees for tasting and feedback.

Coordinated Efforts for a Meaningful Impact

Major Zaheer Iqbal, NSG RH, Kolkata, and Dr. Kironmay Barui, Head, Howrah KVK, coordinated the event. Their leadership ensured seamless execution, making it a resounding success.

Enthusiastic Participation & Future Goals

With an attendance of approximately 200 people, the Millet Mela successfully created a strong impact, promoting healthier food choices and advocating sustainable agriculture. Such collaborations aim to expand awareness programs and boost millet adoption in daily diets.

Towards a Healthier Tomorrow

This event underscores the growing importance of millet in India’s dietary landscape. As the country embraces sustainable and health-conscious food choices, initiatives like the Millet Mela pave the way for a nutrient-rich and environmentally sustainable future.
