In a collaborative move towards sustainability, Coca-Cola India and Reliance Retail have unveiled a PET container recycling initiative titled “Bhool Na Jana, Plastic Bottle Lautana.” This project, introduced through reverse vending machines and collection bins, is aligned with the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, emphasizing the shared commitment to environmental responsibility.

The initiative has been initiated in 36 Reliance Retail stores, including prominent outlets such as Smart Bazaar and Sahakari Bhandar in Mumbai and Delhi. The partners aim to extend this sustainability endeavor to 200 stores nationwide by 2025. The primary objective during the pilot phase is to collect an impressive 500,000 PET bottles annually.

The collaborative effort between Coca-Cola India and Reliance Retail resonates with the Swachh Bharat Mission, a national campaign emphasizing cleanliness and environmental hygiene. By incorporating the mission’s ethos, the project aims to contribute significantly to waste reduction, particularly in the form of PET containers.

The backbone of the initiative lies in the strategic placement of reverse vending machines and collection bins across the participating Reliance Retail stores. These machines provide a convenient and efficient way for consumers to dispose of PET bottles responsibly. The collected bottles will undergo recycling processes, fostering a circular economy approach.

With an initial launch in key metropolitan areas, the project’s expansion plan is ambitious, targeting 200 Reliance Retail stores nationwide by 2025. This scaling-up reflects the commitment to substantially impacting PET bottle recycling, aligning with broader sustainability goals.

The collected PET bottles will be processed and recycled by Reliance Industries, a key player in the recycling sector specializing in polyester and plastics. This collaboration highlights the importance of a closed-loop system where the materials used are efficiently collected, recycled, and reintegrated into manufacturing.

Towards a Circular Economy

The “Bhool Na Jana, Plastic Bottle Lautana” initiative is pivotal to establishing a circular economy for PET containers. By encouraging responsible disposal and recycling, Coca-Cola India and Reliance Retail are contributing to reducing the environmental impact of single-use plastics.

This collaborative effort positions Coca-Cola India and Reliance Retail as leaders in sustainable business practices and sets a benchmark for the beverage and retail industry. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar partnerships across sectors, fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and responsible consumption.
