nnovative Approach to Water-Positive Status
ABB India has announced that the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council has certified its Peenya campus in Bengaluru as water-positive. This means that the campus replenishes more water than it consumes, a significant achievement in the realm of sustainability. Thus, three of ABB India’s six manufacturing locations have achieved this water-positive status, showcasing the company’s commitment to efficient water management and sustainability.
ABB India has implemented a comprehensive strategy to become water-positive, which involves replenishing more water than is consumed at its facilities. This approach includes rainwater harvesting, reducing freshwater usage through the use of water-efficient fixtures, recycling water, and real-time water consumption and replenishment monitoring. By focusing on these initiatives, ABB India has significantly reduced its dependency on groundwater and increased its use of secondary water sources.
Advanced Water Management at Peenya
The Peenya campus has set an exemplary model by installing five cross-wave technology-based recharge tanks and one conventional recharge well. These systems capture runoff and recharge the groundwater table. Additionally, installing water-efficient fixtures has reduced freshwater consumption for domestic purposes. Domestic wastewater is treated on-site and recycled for gardening, which has enhanced water recyclability by 12% compared to the previous year.
Achieving Water Positivity
The water positivity index at the Peenya plant stands at 1.05, indicating that the campus replenishes more water than it withdraws. This achievement is part of a broader effort by ABB India to ensure all its manufacturing locations become water-positive. The Nelamangala campus and Nashik Plant 1 have also been certified water-positive, demonstrating consistent success across multiple sites.
Comprehensive Water Management Initiatives
ABB India’s water management initiatives have been vetted by reputable organizations such as the GRIHA Council, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). These assessments considered several parameters, including water monitoring systems, rainwater recharge, water reduction initiatives, and wastewater recycling systems.
Significant Reduction in Freshwater Dependency: ABB India’s Peenya campus has made a remarkable 22% reduction in its freshwater dependency compared to the previous year. This achievement, a result of effective water conservation practices, aligns with our long-term sustainability goals and significantly reduces our overall water footprint.
Through various conservation initiatives, the Peenya campus has reduced its dependency on freshwater by 22% compared to the previous year. This reduction has been achieved through effective water conservation practices, which align with ABB India’s long-term sustainability goals. These efforts have also contributed to a significant reduction of the company’s overall water footprint.
Commitment to Sustainability
“At ABB, ‘sustainability in practice’ is at the core of everything we do and is a key part of our company’s purpose. Water is a precious resource, and its preservation is critical for us. Achieving water positivity for 50 percent of our manufacturing locations is a significant achievement in our journey towards resource preservation, and we remain committed to turning all our manufacturing locations ‘water positive’ in the coming years. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees,” said Sanjeev Sharma, Country Head and Managing Director, ABB India.
Broader Impact and Future Goals
ABB India’s efforts in water management are part of a larger initiative to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability. The company has achieved an 87.8% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions compared to its 2019 baseline. This achievement is attributed to realizing its RE100 goal and various energy efficiency improvement initiatives. ABB India’s owned manufacturing locations have been certified under the Green Factory Building rating system by the IGBC.
