Collaborative Efforts and Achievements in Upcycling
In the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, where the urban landscape often hides trails of waste, a social enterprise is making a significant impact by turning everyday waste into opportunities. SUN (Start Upcycling Now) is not just a company but a movement dedicated to waste management and sustainable living. Founded by Natasha Dcosta, SUN aims to transform how societies and organizations manage waste, encouraging everyone to embrace upcycling and environmental stewardship. With a mission to create more green ambassadors, SUN conducts awareness campaigns, workshops, and provides practical waste management solutions.
Genesis of the Idea:
The genesis of SUN is deeply rooted in a personal experience that profoundly impacted Natasha Dcosta. During treks with her children across Mumbai and other parts of India, Natasha was deeply disturbed by the sight of trash trails that marred the natural beauty. This stark reality ignited a personal crusade against waste, initially expressed through art installations at prominent events like the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and the Tata Marathon. However, Natasha soon realized that waste generation was a daily challenge that required ongoing solutions. This realization led to the birth of SUN, a social enterprise dedicated to providing channels for daily waste management and innovative upcycling solutions.
Natasha’s journey from an individual crusade to founding SUN is a testament to her commitment to environmental sustainability. By transforming waste into art and useful items, she aimed to inspire others to rethink their relationship with waste and embrace sustainable practices. The story of SUN is a story of turning challenges into opportunities, one piece of waste at a time.
People Behind It
SUN’s success is driven by a dedicated team of individuals who share a passion for sustainability and community empowerment. At the helm is Natasha Dcosta, the visionary founder whose personal experiences and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship have shaped SUN’s mission and initiatives. Natasha’s leadership is complemented by her husband, Ajay Dcosta, who oversees operations, ensuring that SUN’s programs run smoothly and effectively. Their dedication and passion inspire us all to make a difference.
The core team includes ten “safai sathis” (cleanliness partners) who play a crucial role in waste collection and segregation. Their efforts are supported by two trainers who conduct workshops and awareness campaigns, educating communities about sustainable practices and upcycling. Additionally, four “malis” (gardeners) contribute to SUN’s greening initiatives, transforming urban spaces into green havens.
Together, this diverse and dedicated team works tirelessly to turn SUN’s vision into reality, making a tangible difference in waste management and environmental sustainability.
Significant Achievements:
Since its inception, SUN has achieved remarkable milestones that highlight its impact on waste management and sustainability. As a government-authorized waste management vendor, SUN manages five tons of wet and dry waste daily. This impressive scale of operations underscores SUN’s capacity to handle significant volumes of waste while maintaining efficiency and environmental responsibility.
SUN’s initiatives have reached a wide audience, including over 8,000 flats and 30,000 students. By engaging with such a diverse demographic, SUN has fostered a culture of sustainability and empowered countless individuals to become green ambassadors. The collective efforts of SUN’s team and the communities they serve have resulted in the removal of more than 350,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, a significant contribution to mitigating climate change.
SUN’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. The organization has been facilitated by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) Solid Waste Management Head Office, recognizing SUN’s valuable contributions to waste management and environmental sustainability. These accolades and milestones are a testament to SUN’s effectiveness and dedication to making a positive impact. As part of the SUN community, we can all take pride in these significant achievements.
Future Plans:
Looking ahead, SUN has ambitious plans to expand its reach and impact in 2024 and beyond. One of the key initiatives for the coming year is to work with over 100 schools across Mumbai. By channelizing waste into benches and other useful items, SUN aims to create tangible benefits for educational institutions while promoting a culture of sustainability among students. This initiative not only addresses waste management but also fosters environmental awareness and responsibility among the younger generation.
In addition to its focus on schools, SUN plans to develop a modular waste management system for chawls (tenement buildings) in Mumbai. This system will provide practical and scalable solutions for waste segregation and upcycling, tailored to the unique needs of these densely populated areas. By implementing modular systems, SUN aims to improve waste management practices in urban communities, contributing to cleaner and greener living environments.
SUN’s vision extends beyond Mumbai, with plans to expand its operations to five major metropolitan areas across India. This expansion will allow SUN to replicate its successful model in different urban contexts, addressing the waste management challenges faced by cities nationwide. By scaling its operations, SUN aims to create a broader impact and inspire more communities to embrace sustainable living.
Through these future initiatives, SUN continues to champion the cause of environmental sustainability, turning waste into value and empowering individuals and communities to take proactive steps towards a greener future.
