Green Energy : A Major Step Toward a Net-Zero Future
Dubai continues to solidify its leadership in energy sustainability and green economic growth. The 87th meeting of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, chaired by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, marked a significant milestone in advancing the emirate’s ambitious sustainability objectives. The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials from Dubai’s energy and infrastructure sectors, focused on key regulatory enhancements designed to accelerate Dubai’s transition to a net-zero economy by 2050.
Focus on Green Building Regulations and Green Energy Efficiency
A pivotal discussion point during the meeting was the revision of Dubai’s Green Building regulations. These updates are set to transform energy and water efficiency across new constructions. By implementing stricter sustainability criteria, Dubai aims to ensure that new buildings transition toward becoming zero-energy structures in the long run. This aligns with global best practices and demonstrates the emirate’s dedication to combating climate change while fostering green economic development.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, emphasized Dubai’s proactive approach to sustainability:
“In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we remain committed to transforming Dubai into a net-zero economy. The revised Green Building regulations and regulatory frameworks for petroleum trade reflect our dedication to global energy leadership and sustainable governance.”
The updated regulations will reduce carbon emissions and optimise resource consumption, setting a precedent for future regional urban development.
Strengthening Governance in Petroleum Trade
Another key agenda item was reviewing the regulatory framework for petroleum product trading. The council highlighted the continued success of Executive Council Resolution No (16) of 2019, which established the Committee for Regulating the Trading of Petroleum Products in Dubai. This initiative has significantly enhanced the petroleum sector’s safety protocols, compliance measures, and governance structures.
By strengthening regulatory oversight, Dubai ensures that its economic and environmental priorities remain aligned. The improved framework also mitigates risks associated with petroleum trade and supports broader sustainability goals by enforcing strict environmental compliance measures among distributors.
HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Council, underscored the importance of these regulatory advancements:
“Through targeted action plans, specialized inspection teams, and robust governance policies, Dubai continues to set benchmarks in energy sustainability and economic resilience.”
Accelerating Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy
Dubai remains steadfast in implementing the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. By mid-century, the ultimate goal is to provide 100% of Dubai’s energy production capacity from clean energy sources. Strategic projects such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, one of the world’s most significant renewable energy initiatives, support this vision.
The Supreme Council of Energy continues to drive impactful policies that bolster Dubai’s position as a global leader in energy transformation. With continued investments in clean energy, cutting-edge regulations, and a commitment to sustainability, the emirate is well on its way to achieving its green economy ambitions.
