In a significant move towards promoting sustainability and eco-consciousness, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) has launched an inspiring initiative, setting up a “Prarambh” stall in the vibrant Sector 15 market. This initiative is part of MCC’s vision of cultivating an eco-friendly, cleaner, greener city while encouraging citizens to embrace sustainable products daily.
This initiative, labeled “Celebrating One Year of PRARAMBH: The One-Stop Store for Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Products, Empowering Communities in Line with R Principles,” focuses on increasing awareness about the importance of sustainability and reducing waste in daily routines. It aligns with MCC’s ongoing “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao” campaign and encourages conscious consumerism as citizens prepare for the upcoming festive season.
Celebrating Eco-Friendly Choices
The Prarambh stall offers visitors unique and socially responsible products crafted with sustainability in mind. Products include incense sticks and cones made from floral waste, handmade candles with intricate designs, captivating wall paintings, and thoughtfully curated Janmashtami hampers. Each item reflects an underlying commitment to both the environment and community empowerment.
Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, the Municipal Commissioner of Chandigarh, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, noting its significant impact on raising awareness about sustainable alternatives. Launched a year ago, the Prarambh initiative was conceived as a means to provide citizens with eco-friendly product options that contribute to a greener environment.
Ms. Mitra emphasized the importance of choosing eco-friendly products during festive occasions. These choices significantly reduce waste and lead to a healthier, more sustainable city. By opting for such products, citizens can actively support the environment while also contributing to local artisans and entrepreneurs.
Empowering Local Communities
One of the standout features of the Prarambh initiative is its focus on empowering local communities. Over the past year, the MCC has worked hand in hand with self-help groups (SHGs) to provide them with a platform to showcase their talents and achieve financial independence. By giving SHGs a prime shop in Sector-17 and offering space at prominent markets and cultural events, such as the Rose Festival, Chrysanthemum Show, and Teej, the initiative has opened up numerous opportunities for local artisans.
These stalls have generated impressive results in the financial year 2023-24. The total sales from Prarambh stalls at various markets and events citywide have reached around Rs. 3.5 lakhs, while the dedicated store located under the bridge near the Smart City project in Sector 17 has recorded sales of approximately Rs. 80,474. These figures reflect the growing demand for eco-friendly products and underscore the success of the MCC’s efforts in promoting sustainability.
The Municipal Commissioner reiterated the MCC’s commitment to supporting local talent and empowering communities through sustainable growth. By purchasing eco-friendly products from Prarambh, citizens directly support artisans’ livelihoods while contributing to a more sustainable and cleaner city.
Sustainable Living: A Step Toward a Greener Future
The Prarambh initiative goes beyond promoting eco-friendly products; it is a call to action for all citizens to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. MCC has been diligently working to foster environmental consciousness among residents through a series of initiatives aimed at reducing waste, promoting cleanliness, and encouraging sustainable consumer habits.
The Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao campaign—under which the Prarambh stalls operate—aims to inspire people to embrace cleaner living and make conscious decisions to safeguard the environment. These decisions, including choosing eco-friendly products over single-use items, not only help to protect the planet but also contribute to better public health and a cleaner cityscape.
The commitment to sustainability is also evident in the array of products available at Prarambh stalls, all designed to reduce environmental impact. By focusing on products made from recycled materials and supporting local artisans, MCC is sending a powerful message: sustainability is not only good for the environment but also an opportunity for economic empowerment and social progress.
Expanding the Reach of Sustainability
As the Prarambh stalls continue to pop up across Chandigarh, MCC is working to expand the initiative’s reach to more markets and communities. Prarambh stalls will be set up in various markets in preparation for the upcoming festivities, including those in Sectors 15-22, 19, and 41 Krishna Market, until September 1. This expansion will allow even more citizens to access eco-friendly products and become part of the sustainability movement sweeping the city.
The initiative encourages active citizen participation, reminding people that every small step toward sustainability counts. Whether choosing a handmade candle over a mass-produced one or supporting a local artisan instead of opting for imported products, these choices can have a significant impact.
A Vision for a Greener Chandigarh
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting a sustainable future for the city. Through innovative campaigns like Prarambh, MCC is working toward building a cleaner and greener environment and creating a sense of responsibility among citizens to protect their surroundings.
The Prarambh initiative exemplifies the power of collective action—where government, communities, and individuals work together toward a shared sustainability vision. By offering eco-friendly alternatives and platforms for local artisans to thrive, MCC is making it easier for citizens to embrace sustainable living and support a greener, healthier future for future generations.
As Chandigarh continues its journey toward sustainability, the Prarambh initiative is a shining example of how small actions can lead to significant positive change. Through this ongoing effort, the city is setting a benchmark for other regions to follow, illustrating that eco-friendly choices and community empowerment are essential pillars in the quest for a cleaner and greener future.
