WHY LEARN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT NOW?

India’s waste crisis is the next big business frontier - and it’s wide open.

India generates over 62 million metric tonnes of solid waste annually, and less than 20% of it is scientifically processed. Historically, this waste has been dumped in open landfills, polluting groundwater, releasing harmful gases, and contaminating rivers, lakes, and oceans. The current generation is inheriting a billion tons of unaddressed waste from the past.
But this challenge is also an extraordinary opportunity. The waste management sector in India is at an inflection point, driven by rising environmental awareness, new regulations, and a growing recognition that waste is not a problem to be buried, but a resource to be transformed.

Regulatory push

Solid Waste Management Rules (2016) and the Swachh Bharat Mission are driving municipal and private investment into waste collection, processing, and recycling at scale.

Market immaturity = opportunity

The sector has no dominant large players. It is populated by small local operators — meaning entrepreneurs who enter now can define the industry as it matures

Every waste stream is a business

Paper, plastic, metal, wet waste, e-waste, medical waste — each has the potential to become a billion-rupee industry. Most are still waiting for the right entrepreneur

Technology is catching up

Smart waste bins, IoT-enabled collection, waste tracking, and data analytics are transforming what was once a purely manual sector into a data-driven industry

ABOUT FIRDOSH

Firdosh Roowalla is a practising solid waste management expert and the founder of The Green Thumb, a business venture that started with home composting solutions and has grown to manage the composting activities of more than 40 gated communities across urban India.

His journey from home-scale composting to community-scale operations has given him a rare combination of technical depth and entrepreneurial experience. Along the way, he has developed innovative waste recycling methods specifically adapted for urban Indian contexts — two of which are currently being developed into patents.

With a PhD in solid waste management, Firdosh brings academic rigour to a sector that has historically been driven by informal practice. His work focuses on bridging that gap — making professional, science-backed waste management accessible to communities, entrepreneurs, and organisations.

He designed this module to share not just the theory of waste management, but the entrepreneurial mindset, the hard lessons, and the genuine excitement of working in a sector that is on the cusp of transformation. His goal is simple: to equip the next generation of waste management entrepreneurs and practitioners with everything they need to succeed.

Frequently asked questions

What is Solid Waste Management?

Solid waste refers to the daily waste generated by citizens or communities — food waste, paper, plastics, glass, metals, textiles, rubber, leather, and medical waste. Solid waste management encompasses the processes of collecting, disposing, recycling, and recovering these materials, from household garbage to industrial waste.

Why is Solid Waste Management important?

Historically, solid waste has been dumped untreated in open landfills for decades, adversely affecting groundwater, releasing harmful gases, and polluting rivers, lakes, and oceans. Addressing this through effective waste management is paramount for environmental sustainability, public health, and the conservation of natural resources.

Who is this module designed for?

The module is designed for students, aspiring entrepreneurs, working professionals, community leaders, NGO practitioners, and educators who want a structured, practical understanding of the solid waste management sector. No prior experience is required.

Do I need any prior technical knowledge to enroll?

No. The module is structured for complete beginners. You need curiosity, an interest in sustainability or entrepreneurship, and the ambition to contribute to solving one of India’s most pressing environmental challenges.

What entrepreneurial opportunities does this open up?

Every waste stream -paper, plastic, metal, wet waste, e-waste , holds the promise of becoming a billion-rupee business. The sector is yet to mature in India, meaning early movers can define how it evolves. The module gives you the knowledge to identify and act on these opportunities.

What skills are essential for working in waste management?

A nuanced understanding of consumer behaviour, packaging materials, and recycling economics. An innovative mindset and willingness to question outdated methods. Skills in project management, community engagement, environmental compliance, and increasingly, technology and data analysis.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. You will receive an industry-certified Skill Credential on successful completion, recognised under the Government of India’s national skill framework. Valued by employers and institutions alike.

How does the learning work?

Pre-recorded video lectures, live mentor office hours with Firdosh Roowalla, live case studies from real ventures, module MCQ assessments, and a final capstone project. Community access is included throughout.

What is the growth potential of the waste management sector?

The sector is on a growth trajectory fuelled by rising environmental awareness, regulatory imperatives, and increasing private-sector interest. With the sector still dominated by small local players and local governments as the primary purchasers, the entry of skilled entrepreneurs and private-sector innovators is anticipated to transform it significantly.

Can I learn at my own pace?

Yes. The module is self-paced — all pre-recorded content is available on demand with lifetime access. Live mentor sessions are scheduled separately for those who want direct interaction with the instructor
