Tamil Nadu State sets up climate change governing council

The State government has established three crucial missions: the Tamil Nadu Green Mission, the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, and the Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission. These missions are leading innovative climate change activities. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, will preside over the newly created Tamil Nadu Governing Council on Climate Change and the Senior Secretaries of several important departments and industry specialists.

To efficiently direct #climateaction, it has established a particular purpose entity called the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC). Its goals are to give the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission policy direction, offer guidance on activities that can be done to adapt to and mitigate #climatechange, provide advice to the Tamil Nadu State Action Plan on Climate Change, and direct the implementation plan for climate action.

Eminent members of the Governing Council are Montek Singh Ahluwalia (Economist); Nandan M. Nilekani (Chairman of Infosys Board); Erik Solheim (the sixth Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme and Former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations); Ramesh Ramachandran (Founder Director of the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management); G. Sundarrajan (Coordinator, Poovulagin Nanbargal); and Nirmala Raja (Chairperson, Ramco Community Services).

Members include the Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, Senior Secretaries of the Departments of Industries, Municipal Administration, Finance, Energy, Rural Development, Housing, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Agriculture, and Farmers Welfare, as well as the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and other senior officials. The organizer will be the Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forests. The Governing Council will convene every three months or more frequently as needed. It will choose its operational strategies to accomplish its goals.
