India launches Mission LIFE, a global climate action project

India, a strong proponent of net zero commitment, witnessed the launch of a movement to get climate-friendly people worldwide onto one stage. At the Gujarat Statue of Unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled ” Mission LiFE” (Lifestyle for Environment), a new project for sustainable and healthy lifestyles, in the presence of U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change, and the Government of Gujarat jointly organized the event.

The Prime Minister cited #climatechange and global warming as the most significant threats facing humanity and the world. He emphasized that #MissionLiFE makes the battle against climate change democratic by allowing everyone to contribute in their way. Mr. Guterres presented the LiFE logo and tagline and the Mission Document. Dr. S. Jaishankar, the Union Minister for External Affairs, and Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, were present at the ceremony.

To help the world combat climate change and advance a #sustainable way of life to meet the sustainable development objectives established by the U.N., PM Modi termed Mission LiFe as an international endeavor by India. As it is founded on the fundamental tenets of ” Lifestyle of the planet, for the planet, and by the planet,” he claimed that the Mission LiFE strengthens the Pro Planet People (P3) paradigm. India and the U.N. have teamed up on this new project, which will be a success on a worldwide scale.

Mr. Modi promoted a #circulareconomy where the maxim ” Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” might assist in finding a balance between growth, sustainability, and development. These commonplace activities encourage us to walk in harmony with the natural world. All practices our predecessors used to save the environment and that we may incorporate into our lifestyles now are included in Mission LIFE. He discussed India’s commitment to combating the threat of climate change in his speech, focusing on renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

India has the fourth-largest capacity for #renewableenergy in the world. However, its yearly per-capita carbon footprint is only approximately 1.5 tonnes, compared to the global average of 4 tonnes. India ranks fifth in the world for solar energy and fourth for wind energy. In the previous 7-8 years, India’s capacity for renewable energy has expanded by roughly 290%. Additionally, the nation has met its goal of obtaining 40% of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources nine years earlier than expected.

Mr. Guterres praised India’s International Solar Alliance program and noted that the government was working to boost renewable energy sources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. With the help of the National Hydrogen Mission, India has made progress toward a sustainable energy source. This will assist India and many other nations achieve their objective of having a net zero # carbon footprint.

A bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took place at the event, where Guterres lavishly lauded India’s efforts to promote sustainable development. The Lifestyle For Environment (LiFE) project, according to the U.N. Secretary-General, ” is aimed to emphasize critical and hopeful realities,”
